In the search for a more youthful appearance, people are seeking treatments to address facial lines, crow’s feet, and brow furrows. To make these lines disappear, many patients actively seek treatment that involves injecting cosmetic wrinkle fillers into the affected areas.

What is JUVÉDERM®?

It is injectable gel is a “next-generation” smooth consistency gel dermal hyaluronic filler that helps to instantly restore your skin’s volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds like “smile lines” or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds) and “marionette lines” (oral commissures).

What does JUVÉDERM® do?

This injectable gel temporarily adds volume to facial tissue and restores a smoother appearance to the face.

Why does JUVÉDERM® come in three formulations?

The Ultra formulation provides versatility in contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds while Ultra Plus is a more robust formula for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and wrinkles. Voluma is used for deeper injections, to provide greater facial volume in area such as the cheeks. Top Philadelphia Facial Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Anthony Corrado, is a Juvederm specialist. He will consult with you prior to injections to determine what formulation is right for you, based on your aesthetic goals.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in all mammals that helps to hydrate and add volume to your skin. In addition to its use as an aesthetic treatment, it has also been used for more than 20 years for injection into arthritic joints to aid movement as well as for eye surgeries and wound repair.

Does the correction last forever?

No. Correction is temporary; therefore, touch-up injections as well as repeat injections are usually needed to maintain optimal corrections. JUVÉDERM® is the only hyaluronic acid (HA) filler FDA approved to last up to 1 year (individual patient results will vary).

JUVÉDERM® Treatment Facts

Before Your Treatment:

Dr. Corrado recommends that you avoid any medications that can prolong bleeding, such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), for at least a week prior to treatment in order to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

When You Arrive:

If this is your first visit, Dr. Corrado will ask about your medical history, including any allergies you may have or medications you may take, and will tell you more about wrinkle treatment with JUVÉDERM®. JUVÉDERM® injectable gel does not require an allergy test.

Although anesthesia is not required, your Dr. Corrado may use topical or injectable anesthesia to numb the treatment area first.

The Procedure:

Dr. Corrado will place the JUVÉDERM® injectable gel under your skin to augment, or fill, wrinkles and folds. Following the injection, he will gently massage the treated areas. The procedure is quick and easy. The injection itself usually takes only about 15 minutes per site.

After the Procedure:

With JUVÉDERM®, there is minimal recovery or downtime. For the first 24 hours following treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and consumption of alcoholic beverages in order to help minimize the risks of temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the treatment sites. After the treatment, some temporary injection-related reactions may occur, including redness, pain, firmness, swelling, and bumps. Studies have shown that these are usually mild to moderate in nature and clear up on their own in 7 days or less. If you experience swelling at the injection site, you can apply an ice pack for a brief period.

Seeing Results:

Patients should see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing. And one treatment could smooth your lines and wrinkles for up to 1 year. However, results may vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental “touch up” treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results.
