Laser-Assisted Liposuction
(Smart Lipo)
Dr. Anthony Corrado offers patients a new revolutionary version of liposuction called laser-assisted liposuction (aka Smart liposuction). Laser-assisted liposuction removes fat with the aid of a laser which virtually melts areas of unwanted fat before removal. The laser actually melts fat cells, and the resulting liquid is then removed with small suction cannulas through a tiny incision in the skin. The laser also seals blood vessels as it zaps fat, so there is less swelling, bleeding and bruising than with traditional liposuction. Another appeal of the laser-assisted liposuction procedure is that the energy from the laser doesn't just destroy fat cells, but it also stimulates the production of collagen in the skin over the treated areas. This stimulation of collagen tightens the skin over the treated area, which is why laser-assisted liposuction works better than conventional liposuction for people who have loose skin.
Due to the minimally invasive nature of laser-assisted liposuction, it is performed under local anesthesia, which limits the risks of complications associated with general anesthesia. All incisions heal to be virtually imperceiveable following surgery.
The use of a laser in laser-assisted liposuction truly allows the procedure to be less invasive with fewer side effects and much quicker recovery time than traditional liposuction. Laser-assisted liposuction was FDA approved for use in 2006.
Laser-Assisted Liposuction Targets Small, Localized Areas of Fat on the Face and Body
Areas treated include:
| Abdomen/Belly “Pooch” | Jowls/Chin/Neck |
| Love Handles | Face |
| Areas of loose and flabby skin | Hips |
| Back/Bra strap Bulge | Knees |
| Male Breast (gynecomastia) | Mons pubis (Upper Pubic Bulge) |
| Buttocks | Thighs (saddle bags) |
| Cheeks | Upper arms |
Advantages over Traditional Liposuction
| Effective treatment for hard-to-treat fatty deposits |
| Minimal discomfort during the procedure |
| Quicker recovery with little down time |
| Minimal swelling and bruising following the procedure |
| No general anesthesia |
| Tiny incisions |
| Tighter, more toned skin |
Just as with any surgical procedure, laser-assisted liposuction isn't for everyone. The ideal candidate is someone who is in generally good health and close to a normal body weight, but who has areas of fat that just won't budge, even with diet and exercise.
Laser-assisted liposuction Procedure Facts
Surgical Goals: |
To safely remove areas of unwanted fat when diet and exercise alone has failed. To sculpt and contour areas of excess fatty tissue while allowing tightening of the overlying skin. |
The Procedure: |
Before the actual procedure begins, Dr. Corrado will review with the patient and mark areas of unwanted fat. A local tumescent anesthetic is then used to numb the treatment area. A 1- to 2- millimeter incision is made in the skin and a suction instrument know as a cannula and a laser fiber are inserted just under the skin's surface. The areas of unwanted fat are then “melted away” and removed with suction. No stitches are necessary to close the tiny incisions. A compression garment is then placed on the patient to further minimize any post procedure swelling or bruising. |
Anesthesia: |
Local tumescent anesthesia, with oral sedation for further patient relaxation. |
Length of Time: |
The time for completion of the procedure depends upon the total amount of fat to be removed. |
After the Procedure: |
All patients are sent home the night after surgery, and are given a set of post procedure instructions to follow. The patient will follow up the next day for a post procedure check. The patient will then follow up with Dr. Corrado as deemed necessary during their post procedure course. |
Recovery: |
Recovering from laser-assisted liposuction has proven to be easier than recovering from traditional liposuction procedures. Patients will feel a mild soreness after their procedure. Because the laser seals off small blood vessels as it moves under the skin, there is less chance of bleeding, swelling and bruising than with conventional liposuction. A day or two after surgery, most patients can slowly resume their normal activities, although it is advised that they avoid strenuous exercise or hot tubs for about two weeks. Patient wear compression garments for a week or two after the procedure. Most patients notice results within a week after the procedure, but it can take up to a full six months to achieve the final look. In the majority of cases, patients need only one laser-assisted liposuction treatment to see results. However, sometimes minor touch-ups are necessary. |
