Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States. It is also referred to as liposculpture, lipoplasty, and suction-assisted lipectomy. The ideal candidate is physically fit and eats well-balanced meals but is unable to reduce a fatty deposit that is well localized and often seems to involve a genetic susceptibility. While not a treatment for obesity, liposuction selectively removes persistent and unwanted fat.

Bothersome fatty deposits are found in areas that are resistant to diet and exercise, such as the face, neck, breast, abdomen, upper arm, hips, thighs, knees, and ankles. Liposuction can be performed on multiple areas at one time. Dr. Anthony Corrado, will follow accepted guidelines regarding safe volumes which may be removed in one procedure.

Candidates

  • Patients with existing fatty deposits in areas that are not reduced by diet and exercise.
  • Patients with certain areas that are out of proportion (such as thighs or hips) to the rest of the body.
  • Patients who desire a better overall shape and contour and are within a normal weight range.

While goals include size improvement, this procedure is not a substitute for weight loss. Liposuction results may not be evident for a few months following your procedure. During this time your body will remodel and skin contraction will occur. Final results also depend on proper nutrition, exercise and decreasing your caloric intake.

Liposuction Procedure Facts

Surgical Goals:
To safely remove unwanted fatty deposits while recontouring and sculpting a more aesthetically pleasing silhouette.
The Procedure:
Small incisions are made in hair bearing areas or natural skin folds. A special tumescent fluid solution is next placed within the fatty areas to be removed. This solution provides numbing to the areas targeted, while also minimizing bleeding. Fat is then carefully removed from the areas of concern using a surgical instrument called a cannula, which is attached with tubing to a suction machine. At the end of the procedure, the skin openings may be sutured or left open to heal, depending on the size of the openings. The patient is placed in a compression garment that is worn for certain amount of time afterwards.
Anesthesia:
The procedure is performed under local or IV sedation depending on the amount of fat needed to be removed and the number of areas treated.
Length of Time:
The time for completion of the procedure depends upon the total amount of fatty tissue removed.
After the Procedure:
All patients are sent home the night after surgery, and are given a set of post procedure instructions to follow. The patient will follow up the next day for a post procedure check. The patient will then follow up with Dr. Corrado as deemed necessary during their post procedure course.
Recovery:
While recovery is easy, you should expect some initial drainage along with swelling, bruising and mild discomfort. Your compression garment will minimize the swelling, bruising, discomfort and assist in the retraction of any loose skin. Swelling and bruising usually resolve in 2-3 weeks. While some results are noted immediately, your final shape and form will continue to improve as your swelling subsides. You will be encouraged to be up and about the night of your surgery and progressively increase your activities. Usually light work duties may be resumed within three to five days and vigorous exercise within two to four weeks.
