Midface Lift
The midface is defined as the area lying between the lower eyelid and the upper lip. For the most part, this area is primarily comprised of the malar fat pad (the cheek). The midface is one of the first facial areas to display signs of aging. In individuals in their early 30s, some descent of the cheek can be observed. This descent may lead to the formation of dark circles beneath the eyes and deepening of the nasolabial (nasal lines) and nasojugal (tear trough) creases. These effects are further compounded due to midfacial volume loss. The midface is not addressed by the standard facelifting techniques.
Many surgical advances in facial plastic surgery have come about benefitting the midface lift. Dr. Anthony Corrado utilizes an endoscope, a small surgical telescope millimeters in diameter, to allow him to operate in the intricate environment of the midface via a series of small incisions as compared to traditional techniques which require large surgical incisions with the possibility of large scars. Utilizing these small well-hidden incisions allows Dr. Anthony Corrado to perform rejuvenation of the midface so there are virtually no visible scars. The cheek complex is elevated in a vertically oriented fashion to allow for a more youthful appearance. Dr. Anthony Corrado also uses Facial Fat Grafting to complement this procedure, allowing the facial volume to be restored. This may also be supplemented with a Facial Implant if deemed necessary.
Midface Lift Procedure Facts
Surgical Goals: |
To surgically correct the aging midfacial structures by positioning the cheek complex to an elevated more youthful position. |
The Procedure: |
The procedure is performed through carefully concealed incisions usually through the use of an endoscope. The malar fat pad (Cheek Complex) is identified and elevated. Facial Fat Grafting may also be performed at this time to add volume to the cheek and lower eye complex. |
Anesthesia: |
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. |
Length of Time: |
The procedure lasts between 1-2 hours depending on the patients rejuvenation needs. Procedures such as Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift), Laser Skin Resurfacing, Facial Implant or Facial Fat Grafting may be added to complement the patient’s lift. All procedures can be performed at a fully accredited outpatient surgery center. |
After the Procedure: |
All patients are sent home the night after surgery, and are given a set of post procedure instructions to follow. Overnight stay at the surgical facility can be provided for the patient at an additional cost if the patient so desires. The patient will follow up the next day for a post procedure check, and again on the seventh post procedure day for removal of stitches. |
Recovery: |
Most patients can return to work in a week or sooner, although all individual patient recovery time is variable. Patients are asked to refrain from physical exertion for a period of two weeks. Swelling and bruising usually resolve by 1-2 weeks, though individual patient recovery times may vary. Although a narcotic pain medication is prescribed, many patients report only using it for the first 24 hours, after which Tylenol or no pain medications are needed (individual patient pain thresholds may vary). |
