Eyelifts (Blepharoplasty) and the Aging Process

Eyelid surgery is one procedure that can benefit women of almost any age. The trend of doing more mini-procedures is gaining in popularity. Eyes are a part of the face where this concept works because it’s a less invasive surgery that creates major impact. Removing excess skin or fatty tissue is a minor procedure that makes a big difference.
Puffy, saggy or swollen eyes look tired and sagging upper eyelids make the face look sad, old or even angry. Not everyone experiences all of these changes but any, or all of them, can cause the face to look tired and older than it really is. The eyes are the first part of the face to show the signs of aging, which can affect the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids or both. The upper lids tend to get puffy, heavy and droopy and the natural creases fade. As for the lower eyelids, they become puffy due to fat that begins to bulge, and hollows that form around the eye bone.
Under eye bags arise when the fat surrounding the eye has shifted out of place. Aging around the eye is a complex process. With time, the delicate structures of the skin, muscle, tendons and ligaments in the eyelids become weak and are no longer connected to one another. Repeated movements force the skin and muscle to weaken, becoming less effective in holding fat in place as tissue expands. Fat then protrudes and creates contour changes that contribute to an aged appearance.
Blepharoplasty freshens up the eyes and restores youth to the face. Upper blepharoplasty removes excess skin on the eyelids, leaving the patient looking refreshed and rested and permanently gets rid of under-eye bags since fat and skin are repositioned and the muscles are tightened. Because of the changes that occur with aging, the under eye often significantly benefits from surgery.
