Ethnic Rhinoplasty

When considering a rhinoplasty procedure, it’s important to understand that your nose is an important part of your ethnic heritage, and there is certainly not a one-size-fits-all approach. Top Philadelphia Rhinoplasty Surgeon, Dr. Anthony Corrado, believes it is critical to tailor the nose to fit each individual patient so the nose blends in with the face harmoniously.

Different ethnicities have specific features that are unique, and enhancing the nose while maintaining a patient’s ethnic appearance is key to a good ethnic rhinoplasty. Natural results that provide balance require a surgeon who will take into account all facial features as a whole, and not just the nose. Board-certified Philadelphia Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Anthony Corrado is just that specialist. Whether you are of African American, Mediterranean, Asian, or Hispanic heritage, Dr. Corrado can help you achieve the nose you desire.

Similar to other nose surgery procedures, ethnic rhinoplasty involves reshaping or removing the cartilage and bone underneath the skin. It is also possible to augment the nose and add cartilage grafts to enhance the appearance of the nose. Dr. Corrado has extensive experience surgically enhancing noses of all shapes and sizes and will work with you to help you achieve your optimal result.

Asian Rhinoplasty

As with many African American patients, those of Asian heritage often have a low bridge themselves. They also display an overly wide nasal tip that lacks tip projection. Cartilage grafting techniques are utilized to augment the nasal bridge.

Columellar strut grafts are also used to increase tip projection. Cartilage reshaping, tip sutures, and tip grafts can be used to refine and slim the appearance of the tip. Flared nostrils can also be addressed with nostril reduction procedures.

Hispanic Rhinoplasty

Hispanic patients tend to seek rhinoplasty to correct a wide bridge. It is also common to find weaker cartilage and an under-projected tip in these individuals as well, making bridge reduction and tip modification the most requested outcomes.

Dr. Corrado has extensive experience in cosmetically altering the non-Caucasian or non-Western nose, and will meet with you to discuss your goals and desired results.

Ethnic rhinoplasty is a challenging procedure requiring an experienced surgeon with vast knowledge regarding the specific anatomic, aesthetic, and surgical nuances of various ethnicities. My goal in ethnic rhinoplasty is to enhance the beauty of one’s nose without losing the unique qualities of that person’s ethnicity.

African American Rhinoplasty

Most African American patients seek ethnic rhinoplasty to address three major concerns with the appearance of the nose. The typical patient is unhappy with a low nasal dorsum (bridge), bulbous (round) nasal tip lacking definition, and overly wide nostrils. When addressing the typical African American nose, many surgical techniques are utilized to address and correct these concerns. The low nasal bridge can be raised with the addition of cartilage grafts. Typically, cartilage can be taken from other areas of the nose, such as the nasal septum, to be used as grafting material. Cartilage from either the ear or rib can also be used if the quantity or quality of the septal cartilage is unsatisfactory. Placement of these cartilage grafts on the nasal dorsum helps to create a more natural and well-defined nasal bridge. The overly bulbous nasal tip can be refined and slimmed with several techniques. Cartilage reshaping, tip sutures, and tip grafts will help to improve the overall appearance of the nasal tip. Lastly, overly wide nostrils can be surgically reduced to decrease the width of the nose. African American rhinoplasty surgery is very popular in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, and the key to any rhinoplasty procedure is natural-appearing results.

Middle Eastern Rhinoplasty

Middle Eastern patients tend to seek ethnic rhinoplasty for a number of concerns. Middle Eastern patients seek to reduce the overall size of the nose so it is in better balance with the rest of the face. Middle Eastern patients seek to reduce ptotic (droopy) nasal tips. They also seek to reduce the appearance of an overly wide nose. Anatomic characteristics specific to patients of Middle Eastern descent exist, which leads to these cosmetic flaws. A top ethnic rhinoplasty surgeon will have an understanding of specific anatomic characteristics present in different ethnicities, allowing the surgeon to use special techniques to help improve nose of various cultures and ethnicities.

Mediterranean Rhinoplasty

Those of Mediterranean heritage tend to have a hump on the bridge of the nose and a downward-facing tip. Many patients of this descent want to reduce or eliminate that hump altogether, while also rotating the nasal tip upwards to correct a droopy appearance.
