Blepharoplasty Overview

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the upper or lower eyelids. This procedure is commonly referred to as an eyelid lift or eyelid surgery. It is a popular cosmetic surgery that can help improve the appearance of the eyes by reducing sagging skin, puffiness, and wrinkles around the eyes.

What are the Benefits of Blepharoplasty?

In some cases, excess skin on the upper eyelids can actually impair your vision. This can make it difficult to perform everyday tasks like reading, driving, and watching TV. Blepharoplasty can remove this excess skin, improving your vision and making these tasks easier and more enjoyable.

Here are some other benefits you can expect from blepharoplasty:

  • It can improve the appearance of your eyes by helping you look more alert and awake
  • The procedure can also make you feel more confident and attractive
  • Unlike some other cosmetic procedures, which may require frequent touch-ups or maintenance, the results of blepharoplasty can last for many years
  • The minimally invasive procedure typically requires only a short recovery period
  • Most patients can return to work and other normal activities within a week or two after the procedure
  • You can enjoy the benefits of blepharoplasty without taking significant time from your daily routine

Types of Blepharoplasty

There are two main types of blepharoplasty in South Jersey and Cherry Hill: upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery. Each surgery targets a different eye area and can provide different results.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Upper eyelid surgery, also known as upper blepharoplasty, is a procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids. This surgery can help improve the appearance of sagging or drooping eyelids, making you look older or tired.

During the surgery, Dr. Corrado will make incisions in the natural creases of your eyelids to minimize scarring. He will then remove excess skin and fat and tighten the remaining skin to create a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery, also known as lower blepharoplasty, is a procedure that targets the area under your eyes. This surgery can help reduce the appearance of bags, wrinkles, and dark circles under your eyes.

During the surgery, Dr. Corrado will make incisions inside your lower eyelid or just below your lower lash line. He will then remove any excess fat or skin and tighten the remaining skin to create a smoother and more luminous appearance.

Preparation

Before the surgery, you’ll consult with Dr. Corrado to discuss your goals and medical history. During this consultation, he’ll let you know if you need to stop taking certain medications that can increase the risk of bleeding. You must also arrange for someone to drive you home after the surgery since you cannot drive yourself.

Surgery

The surgery typically takes about 1-3 hours and is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Corrado will make incisions along the natural creases of your eyelids to minimize scarring. He will then remove excess skin, fat, and muscle tissue to achieve your desired results. Afterward, the incisions will be closed with sutures or surgical tape.

Recovery

After the surgery:

  • You will need to rest and avoid strenuous activities for a few days
  • You may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, but these symptoms should subside within a week or two
  • Dr. Corrado will provide detailed instructions on how to care for your incisions and manage any pain or discomfort
  • You must also attend follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure proper healing

There are several questions that patients frequently ask board-certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Anthony Corrado, regarding lower eyelid surgery and upper eyelid surgery. Although each patient represents a unique surgical challenge, Dr. Corrado believes that those considering the procedure can benefit from generalized information about eyelid surgery. Serving the South Jersey area, and beyond, Dr. Corrado performs blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery) on both men and women of various ages.

What types of doctors in the South Jersey area perform Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery?

Patients seeking Blepharoplasty surgery in South Jersey, should seek a board certified facial plastic surgery who performs cosmetic eyelid surgery.

Where is Blepharoplasty or Eyelid surgery performed in the South Jersey area?

Cosmetic eyelid procedures are typically performed in the comfort of our in office surgical procedure suite or in an outpatient surgical center.

What type of anesthesia is used in Blepharoplasty surgery?

Many times blepharoplasty surgery can be performed with simple local anesthesia with the patient awake. IV sedation is also used for cosmetic eyelid surgery in certain instances.

How long does Blepharoplasty surgery take?

Blepharoplasty typically takes about an hour. More extensive cases may take slightly longer.

Does surgery of the eyelids require an overnight stay in the hospital?

Eyelid surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, with patients returning to their homes after surgery.

Will I have scars after my blepharoplasty surgery?

Blepharoplasty surgery requiring removal of excess eyelid skin involves an external skin incision. These skin incisions are made in the natural creases of the upper and lower eyelids. By placing the incisions in the natural creases of the lids, the surgical scars are well concealed and barely visible once healed. Patients who require only excess fat removal from the lower lid can have the incisions placed on the inside of the lower eyelid, resulting in no visible scarring. This procedure is called transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty.

Will I have stitches after blepharoplasty?

When external skin incisions are made, there will be fine stitches placed at either the upper or lower lid. These stitches are typically removed in 5-7 days after surgery. Transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty does not require stitches.

What areas of the upper and lower lid are treated with cosmetic eyelid surgery?

In either upper or lower blepharoplasty, three areas of the eyelid are addressed and treated if necessary. Blepharoplasty involves removal of skin, muscle, fat or a combination all three depending on the patient.

Is Blepharoplasty covered by my insurance?

Cosmetic blepharoplasty is not covered by insurance, because it is an elective surgery. In cases where excess upper eyelid skin causes visual impairment, some insurance companies will cover the procedure. The patient will have to see an ophthalmologist for an examination, and documented obstruction of the patient’s vision will have to be substantiated. It is the patient’s responsibility to contact their insurance carrier to discuss their coverage.

Will blepharoplasty treat a drooping eyelid?

A “drooping” upper eyelid is typically caused by a malfunction of the mechanics of the upper lid. This condition is termed ptosis. Ptosis repair can be performed at the same time as blepharoplasty surgery.

Will my sagging eyebrows be improved with blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty addresses cosmetic issues involving the eyelids only. It will not provide improvement for aging or sagging brows. It is very common to perform forehead/brow surgery at the same time as blepharoplasty. South Jersey area facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Anthony Corrado, typically performs state of the art endoscopic browlift surgery. Through tiny incisions within the hairline the forehead and brows can be lifted prior to performing blepharoplasty. A combination of an eyebrow lift and a blepharoplasty is an excellent combination of procedures which can provide total rejuvenation of the upper face and eyes.

Can cosmetic eyelid surgery correct the “crow’s feet”?

Blepharoplasty surgery will not improve “crow’s feet”. These fine wrinkles along the sides of the eye are caused by overactivity of the muscle surrounding the eye, the orbicularis oculi. “Crow’s feet” are best treated with Botox injections. Botox weakens the overactive orbicularis oculi muscle, resulting in correction of “crow’s feet”. Botox is a quick, safe, and effective treatment which can be performed in the office with no “downtime” required.

How long is recovery from blepharoplasty?

We usually tell patients to plan to take it easy for about a week. Bruising and swelling typically subside at about 7-10 days, and can be concealed with makeup at that time. Patients are asked to refrain from strenuous physical activity and exercise for 2-3 weeks following surgery.

Is blepharoplasty performed on men, as well as women?

Yes, blepharoplasty surgery is a common procedure requested by our male patients. Eyelid surgery helps to rejuvenate their eyes, making our male patients appears more refreshed and well rested.

  • Uncontrolled Diabetes
  • Wound Healing Disorders
  • History of excessive scarring or keloid formation
  • Excessive smoking or tobacco use
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Uncontrolled thyroid disease
  • Unilateral blindness
  • Severe dry eye syndrome

How does smoking effect my surgical results?

Nicotine use in ANY form will negatively affect wound healing. Tobacco use can cause poor wound healing, scarring, infection, skin loss and will have overall negative effects. Patients are asked to refrain from all nicotine containing products at least two weeks prior to surgery, and to continue to be free from nicotine for at least two weeks after their eyelid surgery.

What other procedures can be performed in conjunction with blepharoplasty?

A number of other cosmetic procedures may be safely performed at the same time as blepharoplasty. These include skin resurfacing, facelift, necklift, brow or forehead lift, neck liposuction, fat grafting, or dermal filler injections.

When can I wear my glasses after blepharoplasty?

Patients can wear their glasses immediately after eyelid surgery as long as the frames do not rest on the upper and lower eyelids.

When can I wear my contact lenses after blepharoplasty?

I typically ask patients to wait at least 2 weeks after surgery to begin wearing their contact lenses. Patients are evaluated prior to being approved for contact lenses to make sure satisfactory healing, and normal lid closure are present to prevent drying of the eye. Patients are also asked to carefully insert their lenses, and to refrain from excessively “pulling” on their lids to prevent separation of their incisions.

Will I look like I have had plastic surgery after my procedure?

No. Dr. Corrado prides himself on his natural appearing results which lack the “extreme” effects of poorly performed surgery. His keys to eyelid surgery are to impart subtle changes to the eyelids allowing the patients’ eyes to appear refreshed and youthful. The ultimate cosmetic goal for blepharoplasty surgery is to provide a well-rested appearance to the upper face. Focusing solely on cosmetic surgery of the eyes and face, Dr. Corrado has much expertise and experience in performing many of these surgeries throughout his career.
