Submental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin”, is a common yet undertreated facial aesthetic condition. It can impact a broad range of adults, including both men and women, and can be influenced by several factors such as aging, genetics and weight gain, and is often resistant to diet and exercise alone.1
If you’re bothered by submental fullness, you’re not alone. According to a 2015 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) 67% of people said they’re bothered by under-the-chin fullness, or double chin. Interestingly, people are just as bothered by under-the-chin fullness as they are by lines and wrinkles around and under their eyes. Fortunately, many patient haves in today’s society have experienced the benefits of Botox, a minimally invasive injectable medication which helps to quickly and effectively smooth facial wrinkles.
Until recently, liposuction surgery with anesthesia was the best option for anyone looking to get rid of the dreaded “Double Chin”. Today, a new facial plastic breakthrough called KYBELLA® is available to treat the “Double Chin” without the need for surgery. KYBELLA® is being touted by many as “The New Botox”, citing the ability to quickly and effectively treat submental fat with a series of minimally invasive injections, similar to the way Botox injections are used to treat wrinkles, without the need for surgery.
What is KYBELLA®?
KYBELLA® is the first and only injectable treatment that the FDA has approved in adults to treat submental fat, otherwise known as “The Double Chin”.
How does KYBELLA® Work?
KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a fat-absorbing substance found in our bodies naturally. KYBELLA® is designed to dissolve stubborn under-the-chin fat. When injected, it destroys fat cells under the chin, helping to create a more youthful profile. Once destroyed, those cells can no longer accumulate or store fat.
Am I A Candidate For KYBELLA®?
If you are bothered by stubborn submental fat or the appearance of a “Double Chin” and are not interested in surgery, then KYBELLA® may be right for you. KYBELLA® is safe and effective in both men and women over the age of 18. A consultation with Philadelphia area facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Anthony Corrado, will determine if you are a candidate for KYBELLA® treatment.
How Many Treatments of KYBELLA® Will I Need?
For best results, patients should commit to about two to six treatments, spaced a month apart. Dr. Corrado will customize your KYBELLA® treatment regimen, including how many treatments you need, based on your desired aesthetic goals. Up to 6 treatment sessions may be administered spaced no less than one month apart.
How is KYBELLA® Administered?
KYBELLA® treatments are performed in the comfort of our office. Patients will be given an ice pack to apply to under the neck prior to treatment, which helps to limit treatment discomfort. During these sessions, Dr. Anthony Corrado will administer KYBELLA® into the fat under your chin using multiple injections. Treatments are well tolerated by patients and take between 15-20 minutes.
How Long Does It Take To See Results From KYBELLA®?
Unlike Botox, which yields results that last for up to six months in as few as four days, KYBELLA® results are noticeable at four to six weeks after treatment. Once fat cells are destroyed they cannot store or accumulate fat, allowing results to be long lasting.
What Are The Most Common Side Effects of KYBELLA®?
The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness around the treatment area. Dr. Corrado will explain this information in further detail at the time of your consultation.
