Chapter IV

The Consultation

After choosing to entertain the possibility of having cosmetic surgery, the next step is to schedule a consultation to discuss your aesthetic goals and formulate a plan for achieving them. One of the best ways to decide if a specific surgeon is right for you is to meet with them. This will allow you to learn more about the physician, their work, their philosophies, their bedside manner and professional staff.A typical consultation between you and your surgeon will begin with a discussion of your goals for improving your looks. A thorough review of your medical history will take place to ensure you are eligible to safely undergo the procedure you are interested in. A complete facial examination will be performed by your surgeon to evaluate the total face, with specific emphasis on your areas of concern. Following your examination, recommendations will be made as to what procedures can improve your appearance. Many times minimally invasive, as well as surgical options, will be discussed. This allows the patient to decide how aggressive they want to be with their rejuvenation. Once you have chosen a procedure, your physician will review before and after pictures of former patients whom have had the same procedure. This will allow you to assess your physician’s skill, expertise, and aesthetic sense. It is important that the patient’s “eye” for aesthetics is similar to that of the surgeon of their choosing. If this is the case, you both will be working towards the same goal.

Any questions regarding your procedures will be thouroguhtly answered, including a discussion of the risks and benefits of the procedure you are choosing to have performed. Lastly, the office coordinators will provide you with a fee quote for your procedures. You will be given several payment options, including financing options that will typically allow you to pay over time. These options can make having surgery much more affordable and attainable for most patients. Some helpful questions to ask doing your consultation:

  • What is the best procedure for me to reach my aesthetic goals?
  • How is the procedure performed?
  • What type of facility is the procedure performed in?
  • What are the risks associated with my procedure?
  • How much downtime should I expect?
  • Do you have hospital privileges to perform cosmetic surgery?
  • How much will my procedure cost?
  • Are financing options available?
