Tip Rhinoplasty

Published on November 4, 2014 by

Tip rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to change the appearance and structure of the tip of the nose. This can reduce or increase the size of the nasal tip, change the shape of the tip, narrow the width of the nostrils, or change the angle between the nose and the upper lip. This operation can also help correct birth defects and nasal injuries.

There is not a universal type of tip rhinoplasty surgery that will meet the needs of every patient. Tip rhinoplasty surgery is customized for each patient, depending on his or her needs. Internal nasal surgery to improve nasal breathing can be performed at the time of the tip rhinoplasty as well.

The best candidates for this type of surgery are individuals who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the appearance of their nose and can be performed in conjunction with other surgeries.

Suture Reshaping

Permanent sutures can be placed in the nose to narrow the lower lateral cartilage on each side. This pair of cartilages are then brought closer together simultaneously. These are called dome-binding sutures, and are very effective at narrowing the tip and providing more nasal tip definition.

Cartilage Grafting of the Tip

Another procedure in tip rhinoplasty involves cartilage grafting of the nose. Grafting means that the patient’s own cartilage is taken from another area such as the nasal septum, and placed in another for added support or reshaping of the nose. The end result is a more triangular shaped nasal tip that looks much more refined.

Cartilage Reduction
Many times excess amounts of lower lateral cartilage are present which give the nose an unwanted fullness. The tip may have a “ball shape”, also termed bulbous, appearance which causes a lack of cosmetic balance. Cephalic reduction, a procedure used to trim excess lower lateral cartilage, is used to provide refinement to the nasal tip. Care is taken to leave a satisfactory amount of cartilage behind to ensure that there is satisfactory tip support, preventing postoperative tip deformity.

Tip rhinoplasty is a very powerful procedure which can help to dramatically change a patient’s nose, while also improving the cosmetic appearance of the entire face.
